Just an Amsterdam native who won't take his city and its cycling extravaganza for granted anymore, thinking these posts might be clues to others, inspiration perhaps, if you will...

Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no! Please don’t change, China! And please, can people/media stop mentioning electric bicycles as the next big thing? We’ve successfully maintained our normal bicycle culture, let’s not spoil it with spin-offs that defy the purpose of cycling, mukay? Pfff.

Don’t worry too much - electric bikes have been the “next big thing” for at least 10 years. I don’t really have a problem with them, as long as they are not just electric scooters with pedals. The best models give no assistance without input from the rider, and can help many folks to get on bikes who would never consider it otherwise. They’re here, so we need to learn how to integrate them. At least they are antithetical to the “performance” or “sport” mindset - they are intended more as practical transoprtation (whether they achieve that goal is another question, but the intent is good).

thanks, Val, it was a sloppy rant :) I see purpose for that machine, but it’s so often advertised as the best type of bike, as if pedaling is so 1921. When I have the time I’ll look up the links.

Bicycles with electric motors are not bicycles. They are an offshoot of mopeds.

I like the American expat’s solution for a fender!
