Just an Amsterdam native who won't take his city and its cycling extravaganza for granted anymore, thinking these posts might be clues to others, inspiration perhaps, if you will...

“Cycling In Amsterdam” from Harold Olejarz:

Bicyclists in Amsterdam are not outfitted with the protective layers of glass and steel provided by automobiles. There is no armor that prevents other cyclists, pedestrians, or photographers for that matter, from seeing their clothing or witnessing the changes in their expressions as events and emotions cycle through the minds and bodies of the cyclists and their passengers.

The people riding the more than 700,00 bicycles in Amsterdam may be young or old. They may be fashionably dressed, dressed for business or casually attired. Many are locals going to or from work, shopping, visiting or taking the children and the dog out for a ride. Locals may have standard bicycles but many have jump seats for babies in front and back or baskets for children, dogs and/or packages. Tourists travel about in packs or pairs, many with maps in hand. They ride on brightly colored bicycles that advertise any of a number of businesses that rent bikes by the day or week.

On visiting Amsterdam I was struck by the number and the diversity of the people cycling. Whether local or tourist, the cyclists in Amsterdam do an amazing number of things while riding. Living in the New Jersey suburbs I may see packs of cyclists decked out in their riding outfits on weekends or a few kids cruising the neighborhood or riding to or from school. In Amsterdam I saw people riding bicycles that I could never imagine on a bike in New Jersey or New York. I caught glimpses of the expressions on their faces that automobiles insulate. The images in this series are about those people.

    You’re very welcome, Harold, goes without saying I really like your photos :). I had already linked to the rest of your bikes page on the top of the post, but this will work too.

    cheers!

    Thanks Harold and Marc for some really good nicely observed pics…reminds me of some of the stuff Ed van der Elsken shot around Amsterdam in the 70’s:-)

    haha, Alan, you mean these photos by Ed van der Elsken? :)

    Yup, those are the ones. Ed was a great photographer, but could be a slightly wacky guy sometimes…:-). I’ve still got his book Love on the Left Bank somewhere.

    you mean, he acted like an artist? I visit Society De Kring on Leidseplein once a while, so I know what you mean :) Now I have to read that book.

    PS it could explain the pic with the couple on that small bike laughing so hard, I reckon he must have said something quirky :-p

    Ed certainly played the artist plenty of times as he got older, and fell out with publishers which didn’t exactly help his career!
    He also liked provoking situations, so yes, he probably did say something to the couple in the pic.
    He was also quite happy inventing his story lines, Love on the Left Bank was an entirely set up story, nobody was real:-)
    No doubt Ed was an exceptional talent though, he was the only photographer I know that could make someone with a broken leg look very sexy!

    ah, so you actually knew him personally, great! It’s not often that I get to hear a background like that, excellent.

    If he had been a salesman, no doubt he would have sold manure to a farmer :).

    Thanks for pointing out Ed’s images. Clothing may change but many expressions are the same. Nice to see that some of the places that he took pictures in I did too. I was in Amsterdam for a week last year and took pictures over 5 days. Speaking of provoking… a few people gave me the finger while I was photographing.

    indeed, Harold, I feel the same. However, when photographing nobody has given me the finger (yet), did get a lot of curious looks, smiles, hand signs and “Hi, mom”’s. There’s still hope! :-p

    Harold - Theses are awesome photos. You did a superb job of capturing the moment.

    My favs:

    * Woman With Smiling Baby
    * Laughing Couple

    They are all excellent!

    Okay Red Shoes also - only because of the great color contrasts
