Just an Amsterdam native who won't take his city and its cycling extravaganza for granted anymore, thinking these posts might be clues to others, inspiration perhaps, if you will...

Monday, August 25, 5 P.M. Rozengracht. Twenty minutes of filming at an ordinary city artery for trams, buses, cars, motorbikes, mopeds, cyclists and pedestrians, just before rush hour. I didn’t add a soundtrack, didn’t perform any alterations, except that I cut all recorded scenes to 3 seconds, in the correct time sequence, so all lineair. This way it gives the viewer a good sense of what’s considered normal in Amsterdam.

All of Amsterdam’s streets either have a bike lane, a segregated bike lane or just general access to cyclists (sharing the road) where there’s no need for bicycle infrastructure (like along the canals).

So on this particular street there is a painted bike lane, in between parked cars, the main road and the tram/bus lane. Rozengracht is basically about ‘give a little, take a little’ and generally everybody knows that, so you’ll see lots of ‘intermingling’ going on, as Marie put it.

One last perspective: most people consider Rozengracht the least bicycle-friendly street in Amsterdam…

Interesting video. I have a question about the placement of the bike lanes however. It looks like it is well within the door-zone. Is dooring much of a problem? Or are your drivers just very careful about opening the doors?

Excellent! How about a short one at night? I like seeing bikes with lights! It shows me that people in my part of the world are serious about their cycling. Out of the 7 bikes I saw in the dark early this morning only 2 of us had lights, and I was the only one with a tail light. :-(

@Mark: Thanks and yes, this setup looks tricky to many, but indeed, drivers are careful (being cyclists themselves) and it’s very hard to miss for any alien entering the city. And as you can see, A’dam cyclists are talented enough to spot an absent minded one :)
Yet, this type of bike lane is often scheduled to be replaced (when it’s really needed) with segregated ones, which means the entire configuration of the street needs to be changed.

@Aaron: cheers, and sure, why not, and an opportunity to make it more artistic…
Be careful with those critters, they probably visited A’dam and thought it’s quite ok ;)

I’m a regular cyclist along the Rosengracht and I agree that traffic flows mainly work, partly due to the somewhat chaotic nature fo the road!

However, I find it one of the scariest roads in Amsterdam, mainly because it is one of the few roads exiting/entering the city that is clear for a few hundred metres. That means traffic (especially taxis) accelerate and speed along.

It’s really bad at the Marnixstraat end. I cross the Rozengracht at the 2e Rozendwarsstraat 4 times a day: twice daily with my child on a BoBike on the front of the bike, and I have had several near misses. In addition, the tram stop makes visibility difficult.

If I could nominate one place in Amsterdam for some traffic calming, I would vote for something to slow the traffic at this end of the street. It would make it nicer to shop there too, as there are some cool shops at the end of the street!

    Nice video, good site!

Welcome, Adam, and thanks for your comment!

You’re right, Rozengracht IS one of the worst roads for cycling, and the Marnix junction sure needs a overhaul, for all the points you make.

Cheers and stick around, we need more input from locals, not just me ;-)

    Marc,
They didn’t visit A’dam…most of the “dark” cyclists (and usually on the wrong side of the road too) are the ones that work in the low paying service jobs in this country. They are headed to work before the buses start running, or where the buses don’t run.

you know I was kidding, right? :-p

Gotcha, it’s not like we don’t harbor those, I guess they blend in more over here.

Although, most people I encounter (day/night) riding on the wrong side are tourists..

Did anybody “key” that darned Audi?

Also interesting to see was the delivery van stopping as it pulled out. Not sure that would happen here (as often).

    Great video Marc!

No ‘keying’, no aggression, just a few sighs. Oh yeah, quoting myself:

…the only dangerous thing that transpired was that cyclists had to weave on to the road, because there was a car double parked on the bike lane for at least 15 minutes, even blocking cyclists from taking the inside of the lane. After a near collision between a cyclist and the tram I ran to the car and politely but firmly asked the driver (male) of the Audi to move it immediately. To not be bothered with lame excuses or aggression, I told the driver and his girlfriend/wife I work for the City Counsel, recording hazardous traffic situations. It worked.

And yeah, drivers can’t be anything but aware with so many cyclists around and the fact they’ll be faulted in any type of accident.

    Thanks!
