Seasonal Shift [Update]

Gusty winds and rain all day today, only 1 day after the official end of summer, like clock work. Not that it matters much to most cyclists, they’ll keep riding from A to B. Not even the kid cruising along with his dad in his bakfiets, going home from the supermarket. Just like I did.
Meanwhile, [...]

Just an Amsterdam native who won't take his city and its cycling extravaganza for granted anymore, thinking these posts might be clues to others, inspiration perhaps, if you will...

Seasonal Shift
Gusty winds and rain all day today, only 1 day after the official end of summer, like clock work. Not that it matters much to most cyclists, they’ll keep riding from A to B. Not even the kid cruising along with his dad in his bakfiets, going home from the supermarket. Just like I did.

Meanwhile, the people in New Orleans and beyond are literally picking up the pieces from Hurricane Gustav, although (and luckily) it wasn’t hit directly. It looks like the (partly) improved levees held their own against potential flooding or other mayhem, but there’s already alarm about Hannah being on the way and Ike building up. I wonder wondered how Kate is was fairing in all of this…now I know.

Update: I just found out about ‘Trouble The Water’ that’s playing now in the US, apparently a very insightful and chilling account of real people from the Ninth Ward in New Orleans who went through the Katrina disaster, the before, during and after. Here’s the trailer:

Your pic catches the feel of a wet and windy day very well. There can be something enjoyably mesmerising about cycling in the rain in a city….but not all the time..!

After seeing the comments from Raquel on Copenhagenize, a trip to Amsterdam then a leisurely train on down to Cadiz might be the answer:-)

Thanks, Alan, and yes it can. It’s not like we’re made out of sugar, right? :)

A’dam > Cadiz, sounds perfectly doable & acceptable to me :-p

Hmmmm - still 9 days away from our departure for Amsterdam.

Marc, can you see what you can do for us with respect to the weather? So far your prep work has been flawless.

Mr. Turner doesn’t seem to be too bothered by the rain in New Orleans.

I think we’ll pack our rain gear - just in case…..

I’ll do as many clog dances as I can, Les :)

Packing rain gear for cycling in NL is always wise. Note: while you pack normal clothes, rain gear that’s easy and sufficient for short rain intervals (which is what we’re talking about 99% of the time). A good rain coat which can ‘breathe’ and perhaps with a hood. Rain pants for the very occasional but persistently buggery hours . Not more, really, it’s all pretty mild, temperatures won’t drop that much either, don’t worry.

Mr. Turner is Mr Cool in my book.

Marc, can you post a pic of you doing the clog dance, which presumably figures a bike somewhere..:-)
It could be useful for over here as we’re getting the same weather.

Alan, I’ll do that as soon as I move into that windmill I’ve been eyeing and cook up some tulips for supper…i’ll see what I can do :-p
