Just an Amsterdam native who won't take his city and its cycling extravaganza for granted anymore, thinking these posts might be clues to others, inspiration perhaps, if you will...

Again I’m honored with a new video contribution and further interesting cycling information from Wilma:

“I made another litte movie yesterday; the weather was so pretty, and my old bike has been restored and works perfectly. I filmed my daughter, riding around the neighborhood, and used the footage to illustrate one of my favorite Dutch songs (’Fiets’ by Herman van Veen).

Wim Harwig just corrected me, the song is originally named ‘Girl On A Bicycle‘ and written by Ralph McTell. So, I’ll just give you the original AND the Dutch version:

Girl On A Bicycle
Hey little girl on the bicycle, wheels spin like they’re riding on air.
Hey little girl on the bicycle, wheels flash like the sun in her hair.
And the wheels go round but the bike has stopped moving
Trees on the river move by her.

Hey little girl on the bicycle, sun blaze in her hair like a flame,
And the river’s reflecting her bicycle, and the reeds whisper her name,
And the wheels go round but the bike has stopped moving,
Trees on the river move by her.

Hey little girl on the bicycle, dressed in white, the trees were in green.
Sparkling cycling bicycle that moves through the trees like a dream
And the wheels go round and the trees have stopped moving
Suddenly she is gone.

Fiets

Hé kleine meid op je kinderfiets,
De zon draait steeds met je mee
Hé kleine meid op je kinderfiets,
De zomer glijdt langs je heen
Met je haar in de wind en de zon op je wangen,
Rijd je me zomaar voorbij, fiets

“Last week was a great week for cycling in Spokane. There were several very positive articles in local papers and magazines, and yesterday was a new event, called Spokefest. For over 30 years now, Spokane has been famous in the running world, for a race called Bloomsday, which has a segment of elite runners, but mostly attracts ordinary people who do the 12 km race just for the fun of it, either walking or running, with the goal of earning a collectible t-shirt at the end (I have about 5 shirts myself). The arrangers of Spokefest thought that there should be a similar event to celebrate the pleasure of cycling, so they came up with this idea. They are hoping that it will be an annual event, as do I, since I had a prior engagement, and could not participate yesterday. 1200 people did participate, which is a wonderful turnout. (The first Bloomsday also had 1200, but now averages around 40-45,000!) The Spokefest ride was 21 miles, over the same route as Bloomday, and beyond.

Here’s the official website, if you want to see more.”

Enjoy!
Wilma

Thank you! Nice bikes, panniers and I see you got a Flip camera, excellent for cycle videos!

    Hey,
It’s nice that you translated the lyrics, but original the song is written by Ralph McTell and in English.

keep up the good work !
    Wim.

Thanks, Wim, I didn’t know, so of course I changed it!

    Happy riding

I did not know that song was originally in English, although I was aware that Herman van Veen sings translations of many songs! (I usually like his versions even better than the originals!) I will have to search that out. Thank you!

indeed, Wilma, and that also explains the differences in the two translations, the fact that Herman van Veen actually ‘talks to the girl’ all the way through, morphing it into almost a new narrative, a new rhythm.

Wonderful! I guess “kinderfiets” is the grandchild of Opa and Omafiets… fiets, fietsen - about the first word I learnt in Dutch, except for the obvious ones about food and drink, and traffic + shop signs.

It is hard to learn Dutch in Amsterdam, as everyone speaks English, and most speak at least another language.

Grandchild of Opa and Omafiets, nice description.

Yeah, it is hard, the Dutch are way to eager to facilitate that. I fault myself, as well, talking to my expat friends here. English has been part of my (professional) life for so long, they accepted my dysfunction and practice on other people *grin*. But, I do switch to German when I encounter our neighbors to the east…so there :)
