Just an Amsterdam native who won't take his city and its cycling extravaganza for granted anymore, thinking these posts might be clues to others, inspiration perhaps, if you will...

As I mentioned in my previous post, after returning from a meeting I sat down on a bench at the Nieuwmarkt square, facing the street. It took me about 30 minutes to shoot 364 pictures of people cycling by. Not that this number is very important, but it only serves as a reminder that it isn’t very hard (pretty easy, more like it) to deliver another interesting set for you on Amsterdamize.

She dazzled me.

She dazzled me.

While going through that batch I realized that this post (at least) shouldn’t be called ‘Colorful Cycle Chic’. The term is cute and spreading around the interwebs like wildfire, but it doesn’t do perception of this phenomenon justice. It’s the people. It’s all about the people, not some gimmicky and recognizable label.

The people of Amsterdam are colorful by themselves, on and off the bike. Simple, it doesn’t make any difference to them whether they are at home, in the office, going shopping, going to field hockey practice, music rehearsal, visiting relatives, or whatever. They wear what they wear, unlock their bike and off they go. ‘Bicycle cultures’, ‘bicycle tribes’, ‘bicycle trends’ are words and concepts you won’t catch them uttering. Bicycles are just the best way to get around town, for any purpose. Period.

This photo series is yet another tribute to normal cycling in Amsterdam (and the Netherlands). That’s the reason why I posted this in the category ‘Amsterdamize‘ instead of ‘Photos‘.

Nice shots, nice day, and I think you got a couple of fixies in one shot:-)

You have to belong to a ‘tribe’ nowadays as part of the culture - marketing INSISTS on it….(long sigh of despair)

haha, Alan, I know, that’s why I took the shot :). Right on. but I’m not going to ridicule them. Acquired tastes and all. I mostly like how ‘clean’ they are/look. I rode one a week ago (of Amy Joy’s), I know how you have to get used to it, and I’m sure I would in the end if I would decide to make an effort, but leaning over the handlebars is just not my thing. I wish them all the fun in the world.

Ps. Rolling up my pants just doesn’t suit me either :-p

I ride a fixie at the moment, but it has a front brake, trekking bars and a chain guard - must break all the cult rules…:-)

Saw another fixie on the road this morning. At least 2 isn’t bad in a town of around 55,000 people!
We’re in serious danger of outnumbering the ‘normal’ bikes….

hahaha, before you know it our friends at the Guardian will ask you to talk about your tribe :-p

As usual - a good eye — You captured the Amsterdam I learned to love (even more) just last weekend!

Thanks, Les! By the way, how’s the Wifi at the Eden Oranje Hotel? Fast enough for ya? *grin*

You’ve captured that very synthesis of people and pedals. I love that even when so many of Amsterdam’s bicycles are identical models, they each display tons of individuality. Unconscious non-conformity - that’s the real trick!

Spot on, RB, SPOT on. It’s something I’ve tried explaining to many visiting friends from abroad. To them it did look all the same. But then again, quite a few of them also felt all the buildings/architecture looked the same…I was speechless.

My fixie has a more upright oma stuur than your pick-up! no leaning over required! leve de hybrid fixie!

hahaha, Amy Joy, you’re right, I was piling on there. Yours is special, when riding you’re totally comfortable. I think my memory was mooshy on that because I made a mistake…when my brain subconsciously instructed me to coast, almost catapulting myself. See? :-p

My bike would certainly fit with the colourful! I´ve painted (well sprayed) my bike lavenderblue, green and gold. :D

Cool, Anneke! Why don’t you take a nice photo of it (and preferably you on it) and send it in? :)

Well, I’ll try. My camera is still of the anologue kind. (poor students can’t afford new cameras) So it might take a while.

It’s ok, Anneke, I won’t see the difference if you borrow one :)
