Just an Amsterdam native who won't take his city and its cycling extravaganza for granted anymore, thinking these posts might be clues to others, inspiration perhaps, if you will...

Car-Free Sunday events schedule

Today is the final, orgasmic and thus most exciting day of these mobilizations, Car-Free Sunday, yay! Yeah, little irony, as this town of cyclists obviously isn’t bothered by cars too much. Anyhoo…

Facilitated by a couple of Ministries and Environmental organizations, the entire things is pretty much set up by the people. On city scale, towns, neighborhoods, blocks, streets, organizations, charities, cultural institutions, etc, you name it, everybody is involved in playfully pushing for more clean air, sustainability, etc, through fun events.

Like any other major town in the Netherlands, Amsterdam is almost completely car-free for the entire day, but not forgetting about the people actually trying to come and enjoy the festivities. Parking hubs, free public transportation will allow anyone to come along for the ride…right. I’ll comment about the difference between a car-free day and a regular day in Amsterdam in my next post.

Because for now, I’m going to leave it at this and set out on my bike to explore the following (mostly cycling related) events (doable in one day by myself) and whatever falls in my lap in between:

  • Leliegracht Brunch
  • Park For One Day
  • Bakfiets Parade
  • Bicycle Party
  • Whike Try Outs
  • Bicycle Exhibition

Have yourselves a great day too! Oh, and if you’re in town and you want hook up with me, just e-mail me or place a comment, I’ll be checking those on the go.

I doubt if most people in the UK have even heard of European Mobility Week, this is our wonderful Department of Transport page on it! http://tinyurl.com/2zk59q.
Most response has been in London, and a few token gestures from some local councils.

As befits our media love of doom and gloom we’re more interested in coping with our immediate problems http://tinyurl.com/3vshv3
Expect a mass migration from the UK to the Netherlands any time soon…:-)

You’ll have to enjoy it for us, knowing Amsterdam it will be a lively day!
Look forward to your post about it all.

I learnt the word “bevrijding” (and “vrij”) first from a visit some years back to the Resistance Museum - we (a friend from Congo Brazzaville, a friend from Australia and me) couldn’t find it and got directions from a very elderly couple on bicycles who looked old enough to have been cycling back then - if their bicycles hadn’t been confiscated by the Nazis, that is. http://www.verzetsmuseum.org/

Like the Autovrij wereldwijd concept - not that motorised vehicles don’t have proper applications (ambulances, some transport etc) but it is nice to dream of putting them in their place.

I’m looking forward to seeing some of the events - and also reports on events elsewhere in the Netherlands.

You and your excuses, Alan :-p

It was a nice day, a surprise here and there, soon to be revealed.

Damn, I missed it. I had to get from the south of the country to Austerlitz (and back) on Sunday in a bit of a hurry, so of course I went by…car. And on the country’s major roads, at least, it wasn’t noticeably a car-free day. Oh well, maybe next year I’ll do better (and maybe everyone else will too).

Too bad, Nick, but we’ll always have next year, for sure. But then again, like I wrote in my ‘report’ of the day, it was hardly different from any other Sunday.

Car free sunday, mi’arse. I still saw plenty of cars drive by last sunday. If the city government really wants to make a car free sunday successful, they really have to make it a car free sunday. Only with exceptions to public transport (trams and metros mainly), police, firemen and ambulances.

I know, FlyingRhino, keep your pants on! :-p

Obviously the city has to accommodate more than just cyclists and pedestrians, for all the exceptions that you mentioned. Taxis got exemptions, too.

I wish for it to happen everyday, too, given that it doesn’t really matter much in Amsterdam, plenty people-friendly. I really liked the events and general mood. Just fun. Don’t take it seriously, man. That, or start a picket line at the City Council :-p.
