I am very disappointed that my German town completely ignored the car-free day.

It is one of the biggest towns in the north-western part of Germany: Osnabrück.
That is a big town, I’m as suprised/disappointed as you are, Mathias
I am pleased to say that in Ottawa, Canada we have a sponsored Car Free Bike Sundays(mornings only) on the parkways during the entire summer. Many families take advantage of this opportunity. And… bikes are available for rent for both tourists and for those that do not own a bike.
Wow, that’s way more comprehensive than the Dutch/European gesture, imho.
