Cyclemania’s Dutch Cycle Zen Ends [Update]

All good things come to an end, even Cyclemania’s cycling vacation in the Netherlands. We just had a last drink/toast at Cafe ‘t Smalle, after enjoying a beautiful day, zigzagging our way to Workcycles to have their Dutch bikes boxed up for the flight back to Ottawa.

Just an Amsterdam native who won't take his city and its cycling extravaganza for granted anymore, thinking these posts might be clues to others, inspiration perhaps, if you will...

It was a great pleasure getting to know and becoming friends with Helen & Les, people of good spirits, great humor, who just enjoy life as much as they can. Willing to take a chance and just go with the flow. They were rewarded with an adventurous cycle journey around (mostly) the top half of Dutchie Land.

You can imagine I was happy to help them out along the way, where I thought they needed it. I’m equally satisfied that they trusted me when I suggested they should cycle the Dutch way and leave their bikes and gear at home, after their initial reservation of Dutch rental bicycles. Sometimes kidding about it, but apparently this blog was convincing enough for them to actually act on it in the end.

From what I could tell (tongue-in-cheek on my part) it worked out and they loved every minute of it.

Go read about their cycling adventure, it’s beautiful. And there are more posts on the way (as they just didn’t have enough time to keep up the daily postings), so better yet, subscribe! I did a long time ago.

Here’s to you, Helen & Les, proost! And I’m looking forward to cycling together in beautiful Ottawa!

Music in the night.

PS: After that night cap we walked back to their hotel, said good night and confirmed again that we would be getting up way too early to pick up the boxed up bikes and drive to the airport together.

I turned the corner, heading downtown to meet a friend of mine visiting from Madrid, when this fine creature appeared before me. Instantly I thought: a fitting ending to another beautiful, cyclelicious day in Amsterdam…yes, zen-like.

Yay, Cyclemania never loses track! Sleep tight on that flight back (I hope) and be well! Talk soon!

Ottawa, like many places, has missing links in its cycle path network, but the beautiful bicycle paths along the Rideau canal (which many people enjoy a commute to work along, as it ends right in the middle of town, next to Parliament) makes up for it and will provide fond memories of Netherlands canals…

I presume you know that Ottawa is filled with blooming tulips every spring, a Dutch gift of thanks for hospitality to the royal family (and making part of Ottawa Civic Hospital official Dutch territory, like an embassy, so the princess could be born on Dutch soil) and Canada’s role in the liberation of the Netherlands.

Glad they had such a great trip and hope I cross their Dutch bicycles some time I’m in Ottawa!

I certainly know the royal tulip story, Maria, as it was mentioned in elementary and high school history classes :-p. We like that a lot, although the Royals were also long ‘blamed’ for fleeing the country, but that’s 20-20 hind sight and a little unfair.

Les & Helen have shown quite a few of Ottawa’s beautiful trails on their site, but even regardless, I so have to visit them soon now..
I think the odds of you bumping into them have just risen considerably :-p.

@Maria: Let us know when you are coming to Ottawa, and we’ll take you on a tour of our (limited) cycling paths. I can’t promise that my video will be as good as Marc’s though - ;-)

@Amsterdamize: Better book your trip soon…. Otherwise you’ll be cycling in the snow!

I know! Although, it would be nice change and bring back fond memories and see if I still have the skills :-p (to rest: the Dutch haven’t experienced a proper winter since 1995).

We (not only Montréal and Ottawa but even … Toronto (!!!) had a very brutal winter last year - not especially Siberian or Canadian-Prairies cold (only one really cold snap, if I recall) but never ending snowfalls. It was very depressing, even hard to go for healthy walks. I went to Amsterdam for a conference in February and stayed until after the 8th of March - returned to the effects of a late snowfall and huge ice mounds everywhere. The ten-minute walk from the closest métro station took me about 45, clambering over mounds of snow and ice with my wheelie suitcase (people had advised that as I was carrying and bringing back heavy documents). Usually there is a bus - absurd to wait for it if you are not burdened with a small child, heavy luggage or over 80 years old, but handy in such cases. It wasn’t running.

Idem taxis. My street was impassible for cars.

Got home safely and enjoyed a bottle of wine (from a friend in a third country) and some good Dutch goat’s milk gouda that fortunately was not confiscated by our overzealous customs officials.

Yes, Les, I have an old three-speed bicycle in the garage of a relative in Ottawa (I also have a couple of others in Québec) but it needs a tune-up. Would never be very fast, though, that isn’t its purpose. There is a nice ride round the Rideau River (not the canal) and also a great forested path on the Québec side (Gatineau). I have a cousin in Aylmer who often cycles to work at the big Federal building complex in old Hull.

Know anyplace that specialises in cheap tune-ups for old clunkers? There is nothing wrong with the bicycle; just needs a tune-up and probably new tires, though I can pick those up easily.

Les told me all about that, Maria, I guess I have to take both your words for it :-p.

@ Maria — If you plan on coming here, get the old bike to me and I’ll get it tuned up — L ;-)

Price? Your company on an Ottawa ride with Helen & I.

    Deal?
