Saturday Transit

You can imagine all the things you need to do, or want to do on a Saturday. No need to spell that out. Translate all of that to a place called Amsterdam and you know you’re in for a treat. Well, if you’re into bicycles, that is.

Just an Amsterdam native who won't take his city and its cycling extravaganza for granted anymore, thinking these posts might be clues to others, inspiration perhaps, if you will...

Imagine all these people in cars. Right.

Imagine all these people in cars. Right.

I literally sat my ass down, curb side on the sidewalk, on the bridge over Prinsengracht (A) in Spiegelkwartier, and on Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat (B) near Vondelpark. I put my camera down on the pavement (mostly) and just let it roll. Yes, and I got a lot of ‘lookers’ and people asking me about my presence there. All positive, and no copper took me for a terrorist of sorts.

The results: another Bicycle TV episode called ‘Saturday Transit’ and an accompanying photo slide show. Enjoy.

Awesome imagery Marc. Wish I was there with you - just chillin’ and enjoying the sights and sounds of my favorite city.

Thanks, Les and yes, wish you and Helen could have stayed longer, getting some more exciting city miles on your bikes…with nice beer breaks :-p

I´ve been to the UK a few weeks ago, and I paid some attention to cyclists. None. At. All. I did see about three bikes in Cardiff, parked outside the university buildings. (that makes three bikes in a trip of about 1 1/2 week to London, Sheffield, Liverpool and Cardiff.)

Then I watch videos like these and I remember what I like so much about the Netherlands.
I love the woman (site moderator: there, fixed) at 6 min. who doesn’t even glance at the car. Compare (site moderator: there, fixed :-p) that to streets where every crossing for pedestrians is lined with fences, and where bikes are nowhere to be seen.

Quite an horrific sample, Anneke, to say the least, hoping it was just an off-day, so-to-speak.

Cities/countries that once started off with the same cycling pedigree, both dropping the ball on cycling in the 50’s and 60’s, and the NL luckily got back on track again. It shows, indeed.

Dammit…I need to buy me a new copy of Miles’ “Kind of Blue”! How about some Coltrane next time? “Giant Steps”…?

Our students have just come back and the bicycle population has increased 200%! It’s almost getting difficult to find parking around the University…lovely! :c)

Thanks! Very interesting about Amsterdam, but sadly- not 1 recumbent trike. Seems we have more in California! I was looking high and low for a velomobile. Not one. Pleasing way of life; thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Chris. Well, maybe not in those 30 minutes of filming I did, but I can assure you, recumbents are very popular in the Netherlands, including Amsterdam.

Actually, I recently did a little (video) review on the Whike, a sail tricycle. And here’s another example/extension of how well established recumbents are over here.

Nevertheless, I concur that you’ll see more of them in California.

Why are people always so negative about cars. A bit more positive thinking would make for a much friendlier world!
Cycling is dangerous. It obstructs motorists’ right to get around at normal speed. It increases pollution by causing motorists to vary their speeds. It induces pathological levels of arrogance and smugness in its practitioners. Your outrageous site should be closed down immediately and its authors run down by a convoy of humanely-driven cars.

Thanks for the good laugh, BorinPC
