Just an Amsterdam native who won't take his city and its cycling extravaganza for granted anymore, thinking these posts might be clues to others, inspiration perhaps, if you will...

Last Saturday.

Last Saturday.

Remember all those nice, sunny pictures of normal people in normal clothes on normal bikes on this website? Especially those from last weekend? Yeah? Keep ‘m close, for reference, ’cause it will be long before you’ll see those again. Well…the sunny part, that is.

Today the fall finally got to wash away any hopes for a long Indian Summer, thus giving me a chance to address the nay sayers among (urban) cyclists, those who cry about wind, rain, a few hills, etc. Excuses masquerading the idea that people would have a patent on geographical and meteorological phenomenons (’Yeah, rain fall is much worse over here!’). Maybe you recognize it.

Anyhoo, this evening around 7 P.M. it got almost pitch dark, hinting me there was even an encore to today’s terrential downpour. Having had my head either buried in a pillow or my laptop screen, I figured it would be refreshing to open the window of my apartment on the 3rd floor (4th for US/UK viewers), the one facing the main street and sniff up some of that autumn oder.

It was nice. Ten seconds later I was back at the window with my camera. Doh…bike lanes with subjects! A few shots:

Yeah, dreadful, isn’t it? So forget the leisure times of spring and summer; the beautiful women in sexy attire, the happy kids in bakfietsen, the spontaneous braking at fun filled terraces, the feeling of utter freedom on two wheels, me shooting all of that…

Kidding! That will still be here. It will however be just a little more challenging for the newbie viewer to imagine. Me? I think things got a whole lot more interesting for this blog.

I think our switch is supposed to flip this weekend; I’m wondering how brave I will be next week about using my bike for the longer trips (it’s 16 km, and about 20 km to the two places that I work). I’m sure it will make no difference for the local errands, such as grocery shopping. I enjoy it too much to let a little rain stop me!

Now, when the snow flies, which will be in a month or so, that will be another story!

You know, Wilma, I have nothing but respect for your commute. When I make fun of anyone with regards to weather/excuses, they don’t come close to what you do. I’m mainly talking about urban commutes, short(er) trips.

I used to cycle those distances every day of the year, going to high school, for instance. I wasn’t allowed to take public transportation, no matter what. Anything was doable on a bicycle, my parents said. They were right. I cursed it sometimes, but it was fun too. Many times there were fun stories to tell…and many provided valid reasons for being late :-p

Dude! Bad weather coming to Holland? Sounds Like that means I should return back some time soon eh!

You got some magazine potential photos in there buddy, great candid stuff! I love it!

Still won’t make me ride a bike when I come back though. Ok… maybe for your site ok!

Still great photos though! I especially like the final silhouette (cyclists sheltering under the tree) before the camera switches to IR & all the pictures go green.

@NunoXEI: hey, man! Hahaha, yeah, come back, you’re that great weather spell breaker :-p

Thanks, way too much credit, but cheers, dude.

Maybe? Ha! It’ll be either that or me blackmailing you with haring…with unions. You know, the raw thing. :-p

Thanks Karl! However, that particular photos was really zoomed in, they are not even close to any trees. Hard to spot without any deep shadows, but those trees are 100 meters back from them.

I didn’t think I would be posting the night shot ones, but some came out ok. It’s not a style or habit of mine :-p

Marc - You never fail to “capture the moment”. I love the pics (so what else is new?).

I especially like the B&W ones as they emphasize the dreariness of things.

Cyclemania Challenge: Get out and take some videos of you cycling in the rain. Nothing like some Reality TV!

Thanks, Les, I guess I’ll keep it up then :-p

Dreariness comes and goes, you’ve seen the patterns here. Now stormy, 12 degrees but partly sunny. Perfect, heh.

Nice challenge, can I play? :-p

These are nonetheless gorgeous pics! Despite the weather!
