Just an Amsterdam native who won't take his city and its cycling extravaganza for granted anymore, thinking these posts might be clues to others, inspiration perhaps, if you will...

Some time ago I wrote a few words about and posted a little video of my friend Kim, getting herself back on a bike again after 15 years. Giddy as a kid on her new Johnny Loco City Cruiser.

Today my feeds supplied me with another case of rekindled love for cycling. Meet San Smith from Atlanta, Georgia. She talks about all the phases she went through, what bikes she rode and why. Just what I figured when I looked at the pictures before I actually started reading the post. The bottom line: none of them really made her feel comfortable.

One example:

“I really did enjoy it at first - I went so fast!! - but slowly I missed coasting and feeling comfortable while I rode. I eventually started riding my bicycle a little less every month, because it was no longer fun anymore.”

Then, she broadened her horizon:
“After our trip to Amsterdam and Paris this summer (beauuuutiful bicycles - what a dream!), and doing a lot of thinking about the lack of bicycles in my life anymore, it sort of dawned on me. Why was I forcing myself to ride in the manner of sport! When clearly, I enjoyed more just riding in normal clothes, taking my time, and doing my own thing. I did some research on new upright bicycles with baskets, and ended up going with my little Simple City.”

“Well worth my money, and I’m finally riding again with a smile like the above photo!
Hooray for bicycles, and finding out what works best for you.

I’m going to make a post later on this week about little tips and tricks I’ve discovered to making commuting rides more comfortable girls in normal clothes, so check it out! Ride your bicycle, and have an awesome day! :)”

A decision well made, San, you look fabulously Cycle Chic! And welcome to our world :-p.

I’m a recent first-time convert to commuting by bicycle, and I have to say, it has become my favorite means of transportation. Don’t get me wrong, we have a 1974 Volkswagen Beetle, and I love it, and I’m glad we have it - but I really love commuting to work, to do shopping, etc on my bike. Portland has a really good and very convenient public transportation system within Portland proper, and even in some of the suburban areas, but for short trips, I’m finding the bike to be even more convenient, enjoyable and quicker. Not to mention, having a nice bike, I feel more motivation to look nice myself :D

Anyone who might not want to ride because it’s scary or you don’t want to wear all the “gear” or because it’s uncomfortable or impractical (because you can’t carry groceries on a road bike or etc…) or you feel like it’s only for sport -

really, get a utility-style bike with full fenders, chainguard, back rack, etc - you won’t need any special gear or clothing (unless you’re required by law to have a helmet or specific lights).

Don’t worry about going as fast as everyone else, rather think about enjoying everything around you as you ride. You’ll soon discover that even without pushing yourself, you’ll get places faster than you expect, and if you don’t push yourself, you can have so much fun on the way.

Think about getting some exercise *while* you commute, instead of having to drive to the gym before or after work and spend even more time there.

Think about being able to travel at an easy pace and still go faster than walking or public transit.

Think about being able to smell all the smells you go by, about being able to stop and take pictures or simply look at views you might come across.

Think about reducing air pollution in your city.

Think about not paying for as much gas.

Over and over I’ve heard people say they were afraid of commuting by bike, until they actually did it, and it quickly became natural and comfortable. Just give it a try.

Thanks for those encouraging words, Dave, you put it more eloquently than I ever did! :-p
