Just an Amsterdam native who won't take his city and its cycling extravaganza for granted anymore, thinking these posts might be clues to others, inspiration perhaps, if you will...

Good news from Australia:

The Cycling Promotion Fund has submitted a proposal to Infrastructure Australia, asking the Government to fund the construction of physically separated bike lanes and major cycleways in capital cities.

Spokesman Elliot Fishman says the Government should see the proposal as an investment for the future.

“It’s cheaper to invest in it than not invest in it because the benefits that you get in term of obesity and diabetes, reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and traffic congestion and also costly petrol, it actually pays for itself by a factor of three to one,” he said.

“So it’s cheaper to do it than not to do it.”

The submission proposes projects including $30 million cycle-way between North Sydney and the CBD, and a bicycle bridge over the Brisbane River.

Mr Fishman says the plan would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging more people to leave their cars at home.

“We took a look at some of the international evidence about how cities had developed a strong bicycle culture and one of the key things they’ve done is develop on-road bicycle lanes that are physically separated from the rest of the traffic so that cyclists don’t have to contend with much larger and faster moving vehicles,” he said.

“And that’s something that helps more people make the decision to get out there on their bike.

Today is National Ride to Work Day, designed to promote bicycle commuting.”

Next step: abolishing the helmet laws.

It’s great to see that they’re making some positive steps.

Sadly, the story is accompanied by the usual selection of vitriolic comments that accompany every story about cycling in the popular press across the entire English speaking world…

If they can get enough people cycling, attitudes will change.

yes… the “next step” is very important… :)

David, Pavlov would have a field day ;-p

Tiago, the MOST important one *grin*

But if you remove people from their shiny, oversized metal boxes, how will the rest of us know how ‘busy, successful and important’(in any order!) they are??
Altering attitudes like that is not just about building bike lanes, or making driving more expensive, it’s about changing the values in society itself.
We recently had a poll in the UK that voted a foul mouthed, bullying chef the most admired person on television. Seems we have some work to do in lots of ways…
Maybe the financial problems of the last few days will change things for a little while….but only a little while.

A grey, wet afternoon here does make for a cynical mood….:-)

If only the Aussies could get rid of their stupid helmet law - I’m imagining that with horror, giving the extreme heat in some seasons and regions… note all the lycraed cyclists in the Melbourne bike to work day pic.

Yup, Maria, like I mentioned in my last line. Let’s stick to the most important reasons…I don’t want a gazillion zealots getting up in my face :)

Now recovered from the rather extreme earlier cynicism, caused by watching a neighbour pull out of our car park with a blind exit in his large 4 wheel merc, only to knock his own wife off her bike as she was coming in….. Naturally he blamed her for not looking. Fortunately no injuries.

On a more positive note, in our local town about the size of Assen, I’m seeing a noticeable increase in women using bikes, usually traditional English/Dutch style, and not a sign of a cycling helmet! Several have been carrying children in rear seats, so maybe things are slowly changing in the English speaking world..:-)

Sorry I missed your earlier comment, Alan, it was a grey and very busy day for me :-p.

I discussed metal boxes and people’s behavior/nature with a client of mine…while going down the highway in his car. It was interesting… thrice, from different angles, concluding that only when absolute hell is upon us…maybe, just maybe we will change.

Your neighbor reminds of that father/daughter couple on The Amazing Race, when they tipped over in the bakfiets, with him calling his very slim daughter a ‘fat cow’. Black is white, up is down. ;-p

That’s good news, Alan…now where’s the proof? As in pics? Ha! *grin*. Baby steps, man, baby steps. Then progressively growing..

This is fantastic news! Let’s hope that more countries do this.

From my observations, I think this phenomenon has gone viral, Kimba! :-p

PS, welcome to my humble blog!
