Just an Amsterdam native who won't take his city and its cycling extravaganza for granted anymore, thinking these posts might be clues to others, inspiration perhaps, if you will...

Saturday was ‘Vlog Your ABC’ day, so to say. Five second snippets, in one way or another connecting letters that mattered to each person’s take on it. In teams of 3 we ventured into town, Raymond (The Boy King) hooked me up with Sigrid and Joel.

I thought I knew what I was doing from the get go…but, as it is in so many other instances, you change your mind over time. In my case, during filming. Half way, still not sure, I decided I would just continue what I was doing and figure it out while editing. So I ‘taped’ the sights, bicycles, people, details, panoramic views, etc, trying to capture what I wanted to take home from my impressions of Budapest. Both for the assignment and Amsterdamize.

Today it hit me. Going through that footage, I realized my recent pre-VlogEurope / memory lane post had become an important part of the creative process. It was finally clear, Jan’s video about the surprising lack of sounds (noise) on the streets of Amsterdam would be the frame work for my video.

This also enabled me to play it out a little more. Soundtrack? No need. Rhythm section? No bother. It was already right there.

The only guideline of the assignment I couldn’t live up to was the 5 seconds part…these became ten times shorter, lol. Tell me what you think.

Rules - all rules - are there to be broken.

The only thing I wanted with the game this year was to give everyone an opportunity to see Budapest from different perspectives. By using the letters (A-Z) as filter, you could see things, but maybe also SEE them. The bicyclist on the road can be B for bicyclist, R for road, or C for cool. Or M for motion.

I was hoping for different approaches to the game/assignments, and so far I am not disappointed at all. This was a very interesting approach. But what would happen if your cuts were not even? What if you had some cuts 12 frames (or 15 - you used 30 fps in the video?), while others were 6 or 3 or 2. What you could then do is to spell out things differently, create new rhytms, and the sensory input would have a very different effect.

Well, I guess it’s time I give my own interpretation of Budapest soon. Thanks for posting this Marc :)

    Thanks, Raymond!
All true, of course I didn’t really worry about ‘the rules’, as I rarely play by them :-p.

I tried different sequences (yes, 30 fps), but the steady switching between on one hand the letter cuts and on the other the changing scenes and thus the sounds were more intriguing to me. In the end, my spelling made sense to me. More so than the other attempts.

After watching it a few times, my interpretations changed too. Like a person breathing, rhythm of a city, industrial, awe (bunker museum), etc. Some of it in the back of my mind, but now pretty apparent.

Looking forward to your vlog(s), Boy King and enjoy your last evening in Budapest!

Very nice experiment! i will see it again in a quieter environment but the rhythm of the cuts is great and works effectively i think. not rules but rulez! ;)

Very neat. Sometimes I wish I could be more creative like this… instead, I’m the one who captures 90 raw seconds of events and posts them on flickr…

Just fyi, checked out your vlog on my iPhone, and I see you have the same iPhone alternate templates I do. Works great, eh? :)

Thanks, Susan, but you know you’re being far too modest!

Yeah, that plug-in works great, servicing a total of…about 10 iPhone visitors :-p
