For light use, so far my wife's has been a very good bike. It does, however, suffer from the loose skirt guard thing you describe. Nothing else has ever come loose, though. As I said in the post I link to below, I'm gonna test ride them all and make a decision for the long haul, so I'll be sure to keep this in mind. Thanks!

For God's sake don't get an Electra! They are NOT, I repeat, NOT good bikes. My very good friend has one. The skirt guards pop off while riding and the accessories are constantly needing to be tightened and rattling. Save your $$ and get something that will last.

The customizations were minor, really. The Fr8 has a range of options, add, take away, all fitted. Chain/coat guards, fenders, etc, they are all standard on any Dutch bike. People expect nothing less for practicality and comfort.

But I hear ya, it's tough over there, where the whole concept of a 'bicycle' amongs bike shops in general is so sports-oriented.

The part that really caught my attention is how the bike shop was able to do all the customizations right there. I know it comes from having that culture and thus all those options readily available, but man, that's still sweet. I know I'd face about a month's wait if I wanted to do some customizations on our bike, depending on what they are (if they're even available – like chain/coat guards, just not available).

I am currently planning a trip north to to take a couple of workcycles for a test ride. I am afraid that I am going to end up loving it and all of my planning and budget are going to fly out the window. I have just tried so many bikes and none of them have called to me yet. But we don't have any of those pretty colors here I don't think. It looks like the shops here only have Black. That silver Fr8 is sooo pretty.

yeah, there's no escape from import costs and duties, but we are of course talking about an investment in decades and decades of durability, the Dutch would say: 'Goedkoop is duurkoop' = 'Cheap is expensive in the long run'. :)

I've gone up it a few times, both with my Strida folder and with my Fr8 and I can tell you it's un-Dutch damn steep…I'm guessing at least over 10% incline.

This post almost scares me: I really, really can't afford a new bicycle, but I so understand what happened in that five minutes! I'm looking at the photo of the Work Cycles shop and the pretty step through bike on the wall looks so beautiful… Sigh.
