John Forester has a track record of loosely dealing with things like 'facts', Steven. I don't know how you judge his work, but over here he's considered a complete hack, particularly in his understandings/misrepresentations of Dutch cycling policies and culture.

Blánaid, the lights on the BMX bikes are not standard, just for kicks, and thus not to be associated with the lights this campaign refers to, which just are front and rear lights, either mounted or the clip-ons (as you can see in the last two videos).

You're right. About 25 years ago legislation was enacted for all new Dutch bikes/tires to have this type of reflection, which has proven to be a welcome (and easy to implement) addition to safety (particularly regarding cyclists crossing busy roads).

"corrupting influence" - I would agree that's congruent with my idea of the bad "advocacy."

What is the reflective stuff on the bikes - does this come with the bike?
I also heard once that all bikes in the Netherlands have to come with reflective tyres - is this right ?

I think this is much more effective that the lights being promoted

Yet another weird thing about America – I don't know that Americans would necessarily consider it “advocacy” of jumping off buildings, but they would see it as sort of a “corrupting influence” – that is, if you suggest something to a person even just by acknowledging its existence or possibility, they might go do it. I think that may have something to say about how we view our media (the TV told me to!).

The Dutch, to me, have a brilliant sense of humor about life, and I think that's one thing that seems very appealing to me. You can have an ad like that (or like some of the NFTA bicycle videos), which depict violence, make distinct social commentary or are even a bit derogatory – but it's understood that it's in a playful manner, not intended to be really serious, and people are ok with that.

Regarding the first video: I don't think people here see it as 'advocacy' for people to crash and die. It's clearly fake. Different attitude and perception for sure.

First vid (BMX): That would not go over well in the U.S. A commercial advocating people jump off buildings and almost die? It's like promotion abortions. (definitely speaking facetiously here.)

Second vid (front/rear lights): Very clever and amusing.

Third vid (Marcel): Another clever commercial, slightly amusing. Glad that it incorporates youth and "being cool."
