This is one of the things I love about Portland (especially the inner east side), as probably 70% of my riding around town is on very quiet streets. One of the major problems left is the problem of crossing the non-quiet streets – on the way home from work last night, I sat waiting to cross a street for 3-4 minutes while an unending stream of cars flowed by, and then continued on home, only passing about 4 more cars on the way.

Instead, you'll see me here in Chicago riding home at 2 AM in 18°F because I just left a party. It took me 45 minutes to ride home. Oh, well.

Someone emailed me asking for advice about buying a Trek 5900. It's a very expensive racing bike, he wanted to ride 100 miles on it for a “century” ride. I tried to talk about more sensible bikes, suggested he start low, then move up as his needs change. Long story short, he closed out one of his emails with, “I want more people to wear helmets.”

I want so many other things (in the context of bicycling) before I want people to wear helmets. Where do I begin…

Nice video. Yes, my Dutch friend seems very nonchalant about the bicycle system. We met in Sydney where she lived for a few months. Of course she rode a bike around Sydney too.

Cycling is normal in Davis, California as well. I remember looking out my apartment window at 3AM and seeing cyclists. In the rain.

I'll take that compliment on behalf of all the Dutch, tedre123. Generally, it's all about anticipation. That, and most Dutch are really one with their bicycles, we don't know any better.

I too like the absence of cars on my routes, either by segregated paths or preferably in the city zones where there's not much traffic or virtually car-free, as riding is more than just going from A to B, I get to unwind too.
