George,
Just to clarify: They don't actually think they're banning bikes in favor of cars; The intention is merely to "tidy up" those pesky bikes that clutter up the city center, and for people to _walk_ around the center.

Of course the reality is that whenever you make one means of transportation less convenient, you favor others... in this case car and public transport travel will get promoted along with walking.

More bike racks will bring more bikes, as we regularly see in Amsterdam. The more convenient you make cycling the more people will cycle. So from their perspective this won't tidy up their town center.

On the other hand putting bike racks in less than ideal locations will only clutter the town with useless bike racks because they won't get used. Several studies here have demonstrated that cyclists will only park their bikes within a few meters of their destination. If no rack is available they'll find another way to park it where they need to be.

I'm not defending their stupid plans; just noting that they're not necessarily pro-automobile.

When I lived in downtown Davis (California) the area was so dense and mixed use, it was easier to just walk instead of cycle. Aside from practical transport cycling, I cycled extra blocks for recreation. I wonder if this is an issue in Amsterdam as well.

Lovely videos.

Ugh - how can they even consider banning bikes? Because a city with cars all over the place is so much safer and tidier.

Why can't they just invest more money in bike racks in a slightly less dense aread so as to reduce the problem?

Andrei, it's the result of individual, ignorant politicians who place their own preference above the people's. I never thought I'd live to see anything like this happen over here, as cycling provisions are like running water, it just needs to be there.

And since most politicians are sheep, other local 'eldermen' copied it. I wish you could have seen the tv show, because it clearly shows that these towns really don't have a problem. Nothing a few well-placed racks can't solve.

Ban cars, ban bicycles then ban pedestrians. That should tidy things up.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't the fine line between sanity and madness gotten finer?
- George Price

Heh, not saying we don't have a long way to go (I think a car-free Portland downtown would be *awesome*), but the situation for bikes downtown really is improving.

It does seem really silly to disallow bicycles in a city center that has already disallowed cars. I mean, if cars were still allowed, I could maybe see them doing it for the stupid reason of removing conflict between cars and bikes (though I would expect that here, not from the NL). But I can't imagine there are really enough negative interactions between cyclists and peds in those small city centers to warrant shutting bikes out.

Wow this is interesting. Banning bikes?
In Romania we deal with too many cars and don't know what to do to get rid of them, and we try to encourage people to use bicycles (we are few now in capital, Bucharest, around 2000 i think but less are using the bikes every day), but the government doesn't support us too much...anyway. And in your country they try to diminuate the number of bicycles.

So this means that the government, anything you do, will be always unpleased.
I would love to live in a city like yours :)

Andrei.

It's nice to see Portland's downtown actually becoming more open to and welcoming of bicycles. Of course we still have car parking everywhere and huge parking garages, but compared to many U.S. cities, the presence of automobiles downtown is fairly minimal. Bus, light rail and streetcar access is also good and improving, which is great (and helps discourage any fast driving).

Marc, do those southern cities allow cars in the city centers, or only pedestrians now?

If any Dutch city officials fancy seeing what it's like when bikes are excluded from a city, I'm more than happy (for a small fee, of course . . .) to show them some examples in the UK. Bikes aren't actually banned, but the infrastructure, popular press, and murderous driving public have much the same effect.
