Besides being below water level we had a bad experience with law enforcement many years ago that continues to this day and is in the news daily. It is the perception here (50)miles away that you are more likely to get shot in New Orleans than in Baghdad. We don't go there.
Riding a bike anywhere in SE Louisiana is pretty poor.

Well, NOLA is built below water level, so all drainage depends on pumps. On my one visit I likened it to living in the bottom of a wet garbage dumpster. My friends in the Pac NW said I was being too kind…

Thanks for sharing! I agree that biking in FL is pretty horrible. Not just the humidity, but also the risk of being run over by an SUV… nonetheless, Gainesville has a decent bicycle culture, it might be worth checking out that college town next time you're around.
