The other day I cycled to a bar in Spain with my dad for some tapas. While it was doable, and certainly better than driving there, we were missing something: cycling side by side, chatting calmly while we pedalled, like we do when he pays me a visit. Instead we had to cycle one after the other negotiating our way through traffic.

Amsterdam has certainly spoiled me. In the best possible of ways.

There's nothing more enjoyable then our little rides around town. Conversation, or deep in thought, we always connect when we're on our bikes.

I think this is an overlooked, yet important feature of a safe, prioritised cycling environment: sociable cycling.

I've seen groups of teenagers walking, with one of the group cycling with them on the pavement (the Great Evil, if you believe British newspaper commenters). With infrastructure that allows slow, side-by-side cycling, they would be able to carry on being sociable teenagers.

Cycling amongst motor traffic is a whole other ball game: it's stressful, you feel pressure to go faster so you don't “hold up traffic”, and cycling two abreast is definitely frowned upon.
