Veraneando En Amsterdam

A new day, a new video camera, new opportunities. The early evening light was exquisite, so I just headed out, doodling about. 25 minutes of footage brought back to a little under 13. It was a beautiful maiden voyage for my little HD friend & it passed the test…no, it aced it. For those interested: I shot it at 720p & 60 frames/sec*.

Here you go, ‘Veraneando En Amsterdam’, or: enjoying summer in Amsterdam. Enjoy the ride*.

* I wanted to export it to HD 1080p, but it turned out to big. The same applied to the 720p version, too big for Vimeo. I had to choose between cutting it up yet again or leaving it at a lower resolution. I chose the latter.

** Over the years I’ve noticed (to put it lightly) that when people watch a video like this, they often comment: “But what about when it’s raining or snowing? Surely, people won’t cycle that much then?” Sure they do, because it’s convenient. Here’s an old video of mine shot in December 2008, ‘Sinfonia Cyclissimo‘. Or watch Mark Wagenbuur’s videos, winter &

Nice! Great film, Marc. I even recognise many of those spots :)

Thank you for making and putting this film here. It’s nice to be able to escape to a world with a seemingly “chaotic” mix of walking, cycling, public transport and even cars, and then to realise that one is spending so much time on-line immersed in Euro cycling culture that you don’t even notice that nobody wears a damn helmet.

Not like Adelaide in Australia (my home) where the police chase you along on narrow roads and on our busiest walking/cycling path with their car sirens blaring, for the crime of choosing to ride free like the rest of the world (except NZ).

Stunning! What a perfect evening to make a film. I especially love the shots where your shadow precedes you. I am so looking forward to “coming home” next week! By the way how were you holding the camera? If you were American or Australian, I would assume attached to your helmet, but I know better!

It’s so gorgeous it’s hypnotic! And captures exactly what my evening wanders through the city feel like, though you’re a lot calmer than I am in crowds… *rings bell* *wobbles* *panics a little* *falls off bike* …Brilliant stuff, am looking forward to more!

The quality is disappointing. You were cycling into the sun most of the time, but the camera seems to have difficulty with the contrast even with the sun behind you. I hope it gets better with experience, because most videos of cycling in Amsterdam are of poor quality, and some  good ones would be useful.

Excellent video!  We too are enjoying summer on the central west coast in the US, but the entire mood in Amsterdam using bicycles as transportation rather than racers or toys is such an enjoyable and refreshing way to live life.  (I am not a video perfectionist, but I thought the quality was pretty good and brought just the right mood)  Terrific to me!

    great video.  music works perfectly.
on an absurd note–nice to see (tongue firmly planted in cheek) that the late 1970’s cadillac eldorado made it to the Netherlands @ 2:26 (WHAT??!!) by the way that thing is laboring around the ancient streets it seems better fitted floating down one of the canals.

Thanks, Paul, and I’m sure you do! :)

I sympathize, Jim, I’m planning to come to Australia & like my brother living in Melbourne, I don’t intend to wear one, see how they deal with a Dutch tourist…:)

Thanks, Wilma! Yeah, I love how the shadow game (with that woman) turned out ;). I had mounted the camera on my handlebar, bien sur :). So you’re in NL right now? Drop me a line, we’ll ride!

practice, practice, practice makes perfect :)

Paul, the camera’s quality is more than fine. In the end I didn’t export in HD quality (like I said, due to the length/size of file and the Vimeo encoding didn’t exactly make it better. I intend to make future films shorter, thus enabling HD exporting, which then wouldn’t make transcoding as ‘bad’.

Thanks, Chris, glad you enjoyed it and got the gist of it! :)

    Thanks, Adam!
Hahaha, true, that car is ridiculous, but Amsterdammers who drive such a thing (and there are quite a few), really are just hobbyists and must have a private garage…cause it sure wouldn’t fit in a (/one) regular street parking spot. And it wouldn’t be able to make the turn on at least 25% of all the canals ;)
