I do that exact same thing all the time (minus the kid, that is) :)

That time lapse is super cool.  I’ve been wanting to get one of those carriers for my little boy….I was promised a demo by a company, but haven’t had it arrive yet.  Hope to try it out soon.

I just saw that yesterday on another place.  I thought it was eerie how evident people are on planet earth, but I guess that’s from the lengthy exposure time that brightens the lights. 

It’s also scary how thin the atmosphere seems… a thin veil of oxygen around planet earth.

Just think what the poets of yore would have thought of images like these!  

Thanks for the two trips! The first one literally out of this world and the second one to a land where using a bicycle to get somewhere is normal.

I live in Australia where hundreds if not thousands of self-proclaimed “cyclists” will condemn this woman as irresponsible and a child abuser. Why? No helmets.

The good thing is that I’ve read so many blogs like yours that I now see people like her as normal. Hopefully once the majority of Australians who don’t ride bikes see how the rest of the world rides, and that we are a considered a sad abnormal laughing stock, then they will demand the same conditions here.

I live in the United States, where one does not wear a helmet at one’s own peril, and I have to confess that was my first thought.  At least for the child.

My second was:  ”She’s in Amsterdam.  Of course.  This is a long-practiced habit.”

My third was:  ”Sigh…”

I live in the U.S. and have ridden a few thousand miles per year for the last 4 years, sans helmet, crashed 4 times, just roughed my hands up a bit.

Just saying, it may not be as black and white as we think.

(this is not necessarily to advocate against wearing a helmet, but simply to challenge the idea that not wearing one means imminent death)

3 generations of my family (40+ in number) rode and my siblings and I and friends and a billion other  elsewhere in Europe and Asia  are riding bikes without helmets and we are not crack-pots … ooooops I mean we do not have cracked skulls … because we are just ‘commuters’ not ‘bike-racers’ . 
However, wear one if you wish to.  And I suggests small children carried on adult bikes should wear a helmet  ( an ‘authentic’ ones, please!!)  

Funny how this post inspired a helmet discussion from Americans wishing to ride in a better bike culture. Love seeing Amsterdam through your eyes, Marc. Your blog has inspired me to learn Dutch!

Time-lapse is not the same as long exposure. 

Long exposures wouldn’t work in this case, because of the orbital motion and rotation of the Earth. With any exposure length of relative motion there is some blurring, but it can be minimised, or rendered insignificant by using a suitable exposure length for the focal length of the lens. The images would be smeared and detail lost. This is an expensive camera with a highly sensitive image sensor combined with a wide aperture [small 1/f number] lens. It probably was specially commissioned for this type of work. 

Time lapse means a sequence of still pictures taken at fixed intervals and played-back in sequence to reveal movement or changes that may  not have been obvious, or to make an event watchable.

I ride every day in Amsterdam, after last winter and concussion, I always wear a lid when the ice appears……
