With Amsterdamize I use the city as backdrop for what I call ‘humanity in motion’, aka people on bikes. I publish photos, videos and stories, either personal or human interest, relating to my life or others’ who I meet along the way. It allows me lots of room to let the bicycle serve as a cohesive and inclusive subject, a blender, an umbrella, a line to hang things from, so to speak.

Often enough I shoot pictures of scenes that fall in between the cracks of my themes and/or subjects, which I’m tempted to put up, but usually don’t. Because there are others who do a far better job, doing this city justice. Which brings me to Wolfgang Josten, also known as Wojofoto on Flickr. He’s very much into street art, the raw edges of Amsterdam (and other cities), people in general and the number 1 mode of transportation. The bicycle is generally the backdrop for the city that he observes, a passing or stationary object supporting his framing, in context or juxtaposition. I will stop here and let his pictures wrap this post up.

Via Northgeek.com I got to this excellent video about cycling in Amsterdam, produced by Kona, a bike manufacturer in Washington State, USA:

“Just talking to beautiful, gas-free people in a country where a third of all journeys are made by bicycle.”

I got nothing to add, really…besides perhaps that the guard of the bike garage was exaggerating a bit. By more than a couple of thousands. :)

[Update] Ok, I do have something to add, I figured I’d repost my moody winter version on the exact same topic, shot around the same location, ‘Sinfonia Cyclissimo‘:

Friday afternoon, two hours to spare between doing obligatory things and kicking off my weekend with an evening of culture. No, not bike culture.

I’ll explain to newcomers what that means. I take my camera, hop on my bike, think of a few nice spots to stop and I get to pick and choose my object from the thousands of people zipping by. That’s the easy part. The toughest part is deciding on which ones to highlight in this post.

Of course it’s hardly something to complain about. So today I figured I’d not focus on the most aesthetically pleasing photos, but the ones in which the subjects radiate the one main theme: how easy it is to cycle. For anyone.

Oh, and it’s fun, too.
