Yesterday my buddy & part-time co-author Álvaro and I met up at the Workcycles Octoberfietsfeest party (now I actually said ‘party’ twice in a row, but ok). He had just returned from Glasgow and he handed me a gift: the KLM in-flight magazine ‘Holland Herald’ (as a purist I have to mention that ‘Holland’ doesn’t exist, but history and habits are often cruel that way).

Anyhow, the incentive for him to bring me that piece of Dutch promotion became crystal clear once he showed the front cover, titled ‘The Dutch Issue’:

“Our cover this month is by renowned Dutch illustrator Piet Paris [my link insert]. The image refers to Dutch artist Piet Mondrian’s blocks of colour, the national love of bicycles [isn't it 'love for bicycles'?] and the nation’s relationship with the sea. His book Piet Paris: Fashion Illustrations is out now [another correction in this line].”

But let me not harp on about the sloppy editing. What an illustration. Timeless, refined, iconic, gorgeous. I wish it was mine. The least I could do was share it with you lot.

I quickly flipped through the magazine (still at the party) and Ronald Onderwater, creator of the infamous Onderwater family <del datetime="2011-11-01T10:46:03+00:00">tandem</del> <del datetime="2011-11-01T15:08:19+00:00">tridem</del>tandem bike (see photo below), was equally interested.

And lo and behold, 2 pages later, we were reading the special about the Wadden Islands up north, called ‘Isles of Plenty‘. A big part of that ‘plenty’: bicycles, of course. Bike tourists, locals and…families getting around on rental bikes…<del datetime="2011-11-01T10:46:44+00:00">tandem</del> <del datetime="2011-11-01T15:08:19+00:00">tridem</del>tandem rental bikes…right, Ronald’s bikes. Most of these islands are car-free or have tight restrictions and bikes are the main mode of transportation.

At home I went through Piet Paris’ portfolio some more and found one other bike illustration by his hand. Classy stuff.

Art imitating life.

It’s clearly red. Yet so many bicycle campaigns try to convince me otherwise it’s disturbing.

What it really is, is the best way to get from A to B. It is so for many reasons, not least because Amsterdam has made a big effort in making it convenient. Using a bike for getting around also happens to be green, economical, chic, fun, healthy, practical… you name it. Yet, as Marco quite brilliantly says over at Münchenierung, it can never be only marketing.

Take for instance the bicycle parking at train station in Amsterdam Zuid (WTC). You go, get a ticket, lock your bike, and off you go. Your bike will be there when you get back, safe and dry. It’s even free for the first 24 hours! After that it’s only 50 cents a day, so I tend to leave my bike there when I go to the airport.

You will have a hard time convincing people to ride a bike because it’s green -or economical, or chic, or fun or healthy, if they don’t find it convenient and safe. At the end of the day, most people will simply do what it’s easier for them to do. Nothing wrong with that, life’s hard enough as it is.

Amsterdam loves it’s bikes, no matter what colour they are.

For years now, San Sebastian City Council has been leading the way in sustainable mobility policies promoting the bicycle as a method of transport in its committal to a healthy city and lifestyle, values shared by Orbea and the cultural programme designed for San Sebastian 2016. This is based on the ability of culture to transform as an essential element for consolidating coexistence in European cities.

San Sebastian also leads the way in the network of bike-friendly cities, an organisation fostering the use of this means of urban transport which contributes to developing strategies permitting public administrations to be more efficient in promoting bikes.

Donostia, as the city is called in Basque, has been indeed a pioneering city in Spain in terms of bicycle policies. Back in 2008 the city refurbished a 850m long old train tunnel as a bicycle path that links different parts of town. Here’s a little video showcasing this fine example of bicycle infrastructure.

Amsterdam has <del datetime="2011-02-17T17:02:49+00:00">about 750.000 inhabitants, roughly 1.5 million in the city proper</del> an urban population of 1,364,422 and a metropolitan population of 2,158,372. The cycling rate downtown is 55% (more bike than car trips since 2007, if you don’t count pre-war & shortly post-war rates), the rate for the greater city hovers around 40%.

The national modal share for bicycles for all trips is 27%. When I mention ‘cycling rate’ or ‘modal share’, we’re talking about cycling by all people of all ages, both sexes (women a few % more than men), not the popular category ‘bicycle commuters’ mostly known elsewhere.

Let me restate that Amsterdam is NOT exemplary for the Netherlands & for what can be done. Yes, it’s quite good, you won’t hear me really complain (give or take a few issues that will be covered soon). Yes, it is still the #1 yard stick for many capitals/major cities around the world which look for guidance & inspiration and it will probably fulfill that role for years to come.

When do Dutch people cycle?
Dutch people cycle a lot. Of course there is more cycling in the summer than in the autumn and winter. But cycling rates also vary between days of the week. On an average working day, 5 million people make an average of 14 million cycle journeys. Monday and Thursday are the top days with a million more journeys than on the other days of the week. On Saturday, 11.5 million cycle journeys are made, and on Sunday 6.5 million.

Through the week, between 8 in the morning and 6 in the evening, more than a million cycle journeys are made each hour. The high point is between 8 and 9 in the morning with 1.75 million cycle journeys during the hour. In that hour, many journeys to work and school are made, and more bicycles are in use than cars.
Update: Inspired by these figures, Mark Wagenbuur sat down at his editing suite and created this must-see video. I reckon this is a powerful tool and inspiration for any advocate or supporter of cycling in general to get the message across of what’s possible:

Bicycles came, saw, conquered, got beleaguered (1950-1970), needed ‘a little’ help & overcame (1975-present day). Elsewhere, it’s happening now. Some places experience revolutionary changes, others more evolutionary ones.

Growing pains are a small price to pay for all these big gains. N’est pas?

Alright, time to catch up, shall we?

In May I flew to Florida to spend quality time with Lauren & her family and attend a friend’s wedding in New Orleans.

Obviously, Florida was hot and humid, a matter of moving slowly, balance your air conditioning, so to speak. I had the opportunity to bike around, be it in a resort-like beach area, very private, so nothing eventful to report, when you consider the short routes to the beach.

Leaving this area meant switching to a car. Urban sprawl, huge sprawl of course. On the move, I did spot a few locals going about on two wheels. Emphasis on ‘few’. I didn’t envy them, but as it goes with locals, I’m glad it made sense to them. Little glitters of gold in an ocean of metal boxes.

Naturally, my New Orleans experience & observations were quite different, walking around in this vibrant & characteristic city.

Laid-back, colorful, entertaining, never a dull moment, I’m sure you’ve heard it all. Well, as with many other cities, there’s more to it than meets the eye, a vibe you can’t entirely put your finger on. I sure couldn’t, being there for just a few days (not counting that one day in 1992), but I felt it going round every corner. Little & longer encounters, the details of local customs, the friendliness, the smells and more, much more.

I’ll let the pictures serve as what they are, mere glimpses into a rich urban culture that I can’t wait to return to.

PS: can someone please finally fix this water management problem in NOLA? Just one night of heavy rain blanketed the entire city. Thanks a bunch. NOLA people deserve much better than this. (And let’s not even get into the whole BP debacle..)

Any city official who gets to fiddle around with urban planning & infrastructure in relation to bicycles and is allowed to whine, blathering on with the straw man argument that ‘there are too many bikes in Amsterdam’ (re: growing bike use and continued lack of bike parking), should be tied up somewhere high up anywhere in town and watch his fellow citizens ride by.

Preferably for at least 24 hours. And then have him answer the question: “Would you rather deal with too many cars?” Count your friggin’ blessings, man.

We’ve been at this point many times before, in every decade since World War II.

In 1958, for instance, ‘Bicycle Problem In Amsterdam’:

No different in 1970, ‘Bicycle Surplus’:

Deal with it, be smart, provide it, there are enough means & know it’s a real investment in the future. Heck, embrace your very own & much publicized prime instrument for ‘sustainable mobility‘ and put your money where your mouth is. Speaking of money, real money: any Euro spent on bicycle infrastructure actually SAVES the city money, contrary to the bottomless pit that is the financing of car infrastructure, increased demands for health care and the relentless penetration of toxics.

If we’d really take your crying seriously, how the hell would you accommodate The Crazy Bicycle Parade at the start of the Giro d’Italia? Or do you consider the peloton too big for comfort as well?

Just saying.

And please continue to ignore anything that goes on below the river delta, where five southern cities have proven their provincial attitudes: banning bicycle parking from their downtown (shopping) areas, because ‘their square will look tidier’ & ‘and will no more be a safety hazard’ (apparently someone tripped).

National TV news bulletin ‘Netwerk’ deemed it important enough to dedicate a whole show to it (now offline):

“Our city center will be bicycle-free”, the municipality of Venray announced in early March. Bicycles will have to be parked on the edge of the inner-city. Those who don’t comply will be fined. An exception? Hardly. Other cities like Maastricht, Eindhoven and Tilburg are also banning bicycles from their city centers.”

‘Netwerk’ was right to juxtapose their non-existent ‘problem’ with the real issues Amsterdam is dealing with. This broadcast spoke volumes (and at the same time ‘Netwerk’ pretty much exposed the flawed execution of Amsterdam’s ‘orphan bike’ removal program, aka relentless & too eager and sloppy in its signage.

As a source of mine at the Cyclists Union jokingly responded to the southern bans: “Must be something toxic in the (holy) water.” Yeah, but even there not all are infected or just plain stupid. I’ll make up my mind in a few months, see if any protests will have emerged by then…

In any case, it should be easy to do MUCH better over here, right?

Recently the Dutch government went down over the Afghanistan military mission, in a way only a Dutch cabinet can. Fingers were pointed, responsibilities were shunned, opportunism mixed up with historical revisionism, ‘lessons were learned’, the dust seemed to settle a bit, but stirred up again in light of the upcoming municipal elections and…not long after some back room tap dancing it has become crystal clear that the status quo will be restored between now and the new general elections in June.

However, there was one little, and dare I say it, revolutionary storm whirling around the Dutch Parliament building in The Hague…shaking things up, knocking a different kind of status quo….of course, I’m just kidding! We’re still talking about the Netherlands! Jeeeezzz…

Then again, it was a national news item (video):

Minister Donner (Social Affairs & Labor) was handed a new 3-speed bicycle as a gift last week. Now, don’t think that would instantly replace his trusty black old (some would say ‘vintage’), mint condition one-speed Gazelle bicycle. Like many of his colleagues and his predecessors he rides to work every day, and he doesn’t stop when he has to consult with the Queen at her palace.

“This is my first bike with gears. These days, with so much work to do, they will come in handy.” Acting-minister Piet Hein Donner happily accepted his new bike. “A new bicycle, a new beginning”, he stated optimistically.

The two-wheeler is a gift from the Employee Organization VNO-NCW. Chairman Bert van de Haar handed the bicycle to ‘the role model of Dutch cycling’. Donner always cycles to work from his home in Statenkwartier [neighborhood in The Hague]. The Christian Democrat does so on a very reliable model, the type of bicycle that people once called ‘the steel stallion’. “I keep it for my commute. It’s so old that it won’t get stolen’, the minister says.

Photo: Donner’s private parking at his department

He’d like to use his new bicycle (“Blimey, lights without dynamo”) for his rides between the House of Parliament and his ministry. He can’t keep the bicycle. “It probably costs more than €50. I will have to put it in the locker with all the other gifts for officials….or use it as an official departmental bicycle.” [which is most likely, as each department has a bike garage full of them]

There are 18 million bicycles in the Netherlands, says Donner’s colleague Joop Atsma. “In 2006 765.000 bicycles were stolen. It looks like that number has been going down by 100.000 each year. The next government needs to bring that number below 500.000. All new bicycles need to be registered and have chips installed. Police and parking facilitators need to be equipped with readers to track down stolen bicycles.”

So there you have it.

Often enough our leaders piss us off, disappoint us and we wish they’d just go away. But touch on a subject like this and for a brief moment they suddenly makes sense again.

Leading up to this, she was very excited about the prospect of riding her new bicycle around. Not the omafiets I had bought her around the holidays, but a different one, the very special Workcycles Secret Service I had won in the BicycleMania photo contest. All that was left for her to do, was hop on the back of my bike and ride with me to the place where the small prize ceremony would unfold.

We were welcomed by Eduard Planting of ‘Fine Art Photographs‘, Bert van Essen of The Expat Journal, the publisher of BicycleMania and Henry Cutler of Workcycles, who sponsored the first prize.

I can safely say this bicycle found its rightful owner.

It won’t come as a surprise when I tell you this really made my day. A bit of background information on Bicycle Mania (via Bakfiets-en-meer):

Every fan and promoter of urban cycling simply needs a copy of Shirley Agudo’s “Bicycle Mania”. You can regard it as a photo book, with probably the best collection of Dutch cycling photos ever assembled. Even as an Amsterdam resident and amateur(ish) photographer I marvel at the shots in these pages. Have a peek at a few examples here at the Eduard Planting gallery.

But “Bicycle Mania” goes much deeper. The photos are accompanied by well-informed and thoughtfully written text covering in sections covering the how and why the Dutch have achieved (and continue to build upon) the world’s best of nearly everything in transportation cycling: broad popularity, amazing infrastructure, safety, fun and pure variety on wheels. The text is in both English and Dutch, handy learning for those anglophiles who want to delve deeper into Dutch cycling culture than English can take you. Numerous authorities are interviewed, hyperbole and abuse of statistics is thankfully avoided and and it’s just a good read. In a nutshell: Recommended.

The photo I entered: ‘Family Cycle Train’, from the photo set ‘Saturday Cycle Modes‘.

As of today ‘Family Cycle Train’ is displayed in the window of The American Book Center in Amsterdam (Spui 12) and The Hague (Lange Poten 23). It will also be published in the next issue of The XPat Journal magazine (March 2010).

And of course the grand prize: a special edition Workcycles Secret Service and a copy of the book Bicycle Mania. I will read the book and Lauren will ride the bike ;).

It really made my day. Honored and proud. I think I will make one or two stops downtown and in the Jordaan today :).

Update: you gotta love the internetz, @IkbendAF (a contact on Twitter) already went by the store and took this picture:

Not only did Shirley Agudo’s book beat me to the punch, now a fan does too ;).

Disclosure: as you know I have a close relationship with Workcycles, call it ‘a fan, based on customer experience, but Henry was not on the jury, he ‘just’ sponsored this contest.

Meet Daniela. Daniela is Italian, but really a global citizen, having worked in different cities around Europe. Recently she moved from London to Amsterdam and one important piece missing in her daily routines was a bicycle. She’d done without one in London (“Cycling there is crazy.”), so she couldn’t wait getting her hands on one in Amsterdam, she felt imcomplete. What else is new, right? :)

I promised I’d help her find a good, reasonably priced second-hand one, so I did. We set out to find a sturdy, reliable and elegant Omafiets.

Of course there are many, many shops to choose from, you’d have a field day going by them all. In our case, she was referred to a particular one in her neighborhood and I knew of another one not far from there.

The conceptual power of a chain lock

The first shop was entirely sold out, no more Omafietsen, except for one light purple Batavus, less than 2 years old. It looked solid, the ride was nice, but Daniela wasn’t swept off her feet. Worth the price, sure, but this called for more bicycle shop browsing.

Dr. Beyk [pronounce: Bike] on Overtoom was next. 2nd hand and new bikes, all low-end pricing. Generic stuff, Azors, but basically packed with the type of bike that would suit her needs.

Daniela was instantly drawn by a black Omafiets that was parked out front, among two dozens more. Old, but all the parts that are to be expected to be on there, were there. Just the front and rear light were new and battery-powered. She wanted to have it, this gracious piece of pedalmotive brilliance. She walked into the shop to quickly glance at other ones, but she wasn’t fooling me, she’d already made up her mind.

Two minutes later she talked price with the owner, I made sure that he’d tighten the spokes and she got the right chain lock to accompany the standard issue wheel lock. That in itself already had Daniela jumping for joy.

10 minutes later the bicycle was all ready to go, released to the care (with 3 months warranty and maintenance) of her new owner, who by that time couldn’t help but shriek and clap her hands in excitement..;).

We quickly rode off into Vondelpark for Camilla’s maiden voyage…the rest is now part of Amsterdamize Bicycle TV history.

This morning the summer seems to have come to an end, chilly, windy, you can just smell it, it’s over.

It’s been a great summer and an unbelievably good year for Amsterdamize, ever since I decided to expand on my cycling endeavors and day-to-day shenanigans in May 2008.

Browsing my pics I realized that over this period of time taking Panda Portraits has really grown on me. It started out here and it evolved beautifully & massively.

Well, I like to pay tribute to this summer, cycling and all you good people by asking you to submit your best Panda Portrait to Amsterdamize and I’ll make a fitting collage.

You don’t have one? Then go do one! Anything goes, as long as it’s a self-portrait, either of you on your bike or the perspective of you riding, put the bicycle that you love front and center, on the fly.

It’ll be fun, trust me. Cheers!

Now, if you’ll excuse me for the next few days, I have to organize my stuff for my move into my new house ;).

What follows is one of the cutest things I’ve read from anyone having visited Amsterdam, aka a good case of ‘Amsterdam Through Strangers’ Eyes’, by Garance Doré.

So, obviously, the photo above here isn’t me, nor is it my bike. But just to show you the coolitude of biking in Amsterdam, you needed to see at least one real Dutch girl on a real Dutch bike.

Because you’re constantly passing cool girls on bikes in Amsterdam. It’s simple, I asked around. It’s that no one knows anyone who doesn’t have a bike. Whoa, that’s a tough one. I’ll try again: everyone has a bike.

“It’s so great. You all have rock hard thighs,” I said. I’m so perceptive.

“It’s not that,” Ramona said. “Our legs don’t get anything from biking now. They’re too used to it.”

Aha. It’s still not fair.

Ramona was my guardian angel during these few wonderful days in Amsterdam. She was the one who glued me to my bike for the first half hour. She was also the one that taught me these :

- When you park your bike in the middle of the 350 other bikes all clustered together in each spot, if you knock them all over, IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT. It’s the owners’ fault who poorly parked them. “Even if you make ALL of them fall, Ramona?” “Yes, Garance. As long as yours is standing tall, you can leave with your head up. No one will say a thing.” Duly noted. And more than once.

- You can do everything on your bike… Talk on the phone, Google a restaurant, eat a sandwich, hold an umbrella in the rain (EVERYONE does that. It’s impressive.), CHANGE YOUR SHOES WHILE PEDDLING, TAKE A NAP. You can even do some streetstyle on them. The proof is right above with Elza. When we found her, we were riding our bikes. We followed her for a bit, like true crazies on bikes.

- You have to give a name to your bike. It’s essential and that’s just how it is. When I asked what Ramona had named hers, she couldn’t tell me. But I really wanted to believe this whole name thing… like really… Check out this photo below and you’ll see, see what I’m saying?

There he was, lost in a sea of others. When I saw him, I knew he was mine. My bike, my ally, my companion. I couldn’t not give him a name.

Chuck Bass. Yep. What better name could define the mix of purebred elegance and risqué style? Because I’m telling you, with Chuck Bass, I promise you that no matter where you go, you’ll never go unnoticed. Aaaah, yep, it’s gotta be the stretch limo.

Yours truly looking ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS with my little red and white sign that said, “Hey there, I’m a tourist. So whenever you feel like cutting me off and being all pissy and irritated, go right ahead my dear ladies and gentlemen of Amsterdam.”

Oh who cares? It’s Chuck Bass and me, and I love him. And then this morning, looking at him for one last time before taking my train, I felt a little tear drop down my cheek. He didn’t even move.

These bikes, they’re such bastards.

Translation : <a href="http://americainshort.com/" target-"_blank">Tim Sullivan

All true. Hands down.

Update: I went to a club downtown not so long ago and actually saw the girl from the top photo. I approached her and said I recognized her from this photo. She was quite stunned.

My good cycle chic friend Mikael and proprietor of Copenhagenize & Copenhagencyclechic dropped in yesterday evening for a quick stopover in Amsterdam before heading home.

After four days of talking bike culture at the international and very popular Velocity 2009 conference in Brussels (a city that desperately needs to do an infrastructure overhaul, to say the least), it was pretty clear he needed a fix.

No, that substance was not included, we left it to the accord of the sheer intoxicating beauty of hundreds of thousands of people on bicycles moving about in the city.

Henry from Workcycles provided his ride, I assumed the role of a non-structured tour guide and we used the limited amount of time as well as we could.

Of course we whipped out our photo cameras and I recorded a little video for prosperity with my mobile (warning: crappy quality).
